Karen and Kevin

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
This week's spotlight shines on Skirtz & Johntson Bakery, who joined the market at the beginning of this year's outdoor season.  Regular customers of LEWFM will recognize Kevin and Karen, who bring us the delicious breads, bagels (and sometimes buns) baked fresh daily at the Skirtz & Johnston Bakery.

While pastry Chefs Stefan Skirtz and Andrew Johnston have over 20 years experience in the pastry field, they first joined forces in 2010 when they decided to open a bakery in Findlay Market.  Chefs Skirtz and Johnston wanted to bring their old world artisan breads to the Cincinnati area.  In the two years since opening their bakery they have experienced great success.  This success is due no doubt to the high quality and delicious taste of their products.

Kevin and Karen invite you to stop by the Skirtz & Johnston booth to sample the breads.  Just a warning though:  You might have a difficult time deciding on which bread to buy.  Solution?  Buy several, because they also offer a Frequent Buyer Card, where after purchasing 10 loaves of bread the 11th loaf is free.  Just bring your card back each week until it is ready to be redeemed for the free loaf.

NOTICES
Farm Tour
The Romans Family Farm will hold a Farm Tour this Saturday, June 30 from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. at their farm at 6174 Pendelton Run Road Vevay, Indiana 47043.  If you want to get up close and personal with how your food is grown this is a great opportunity to do so.  For directions or further information you may call the Romans at (812) 427-3083 or visit their  Facebook page

Location of Market
For those of you who are accustomed to the market being in an alternate location when a festival is held at Harvest Home Park, please note that market will be held in its usual location this week, even though the Cheviot Fire Department will be celebrating their 100 year anniversary this weekend with a festival at HHP.  When the festival starts at 6:00 on Friday, the market will be doing a kind of co-mingelling with the festival.  You might want to take in the festival after shopping at the market.

Free Market Bucks, Final Week
To celebrate the market's second anniversary, we are giving away free Market Bucks during the month of June.  Here's how it works:  When you bring a new customer to market, each of you receive a free Market Buck which you can spend at any of the vendor booths.  There is no limit to the number of new customers you can bring to market, so load up the car and come on down.  Offer good for adults only.

Naturally Yours Bakers
After a two-week absence, Lisa, of Naturally Yours Bakery, will return this week.  Welcome back, Lisa.  We missed you!

SEASONAL & CHANGING PRODUCTS/ITEMS
Each week we see a larger variety of produce at the market. While lettuces, salad greens, cooking greens, garlic, green onions, and some other early season items remain, we are now seeing the beginnings of cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi, carrots, and even green beans.  The crisper drawer of the fridge is becoming fuller and fuller each week as it again reflects a time of more plentiful produce.

Our vendors tell us that it looks like the green beans will offer a bumper crop.  Keep in mind that if you are interested in Eating Well year round, now is the time to start thinking about preserving some of the bounty while it's plentiful.  If you are unsure about how to preserve produce, there are loads of online sources detailing how to freeze, can, or dry produce.  You can also ask the vendors at the market.  They will be eager to share their techniques so as to make the task of food preservation a not-too-difficult one.

If room remains in your own garden for a few more veggie plants, check out the tomato and pepper plants while they last. You can also purchase herbs, both cut and potted, along with beautiful potted plant arrangements.  And to brighten up your home, or to give as gifts, several vendors are now offering gorgeous cut flower bouquets.

They will be at market this week; and, just in time for the upcoming July 4 holiday, they will have a variety of meats just waiting for you to heat up the grill.

KIDS & KRAFTS

Charles Purdue is a natural with the kids: They gravitate to him and his hand made Native American Flutes, "tape drums" and other fun games and craft activities he brings to market so kids can have loads of fun while their parents peacefully and leisurely shop the market. Parents tell us their children, who hate to go to the grocery store love to go to the Farmers' Market so they can hang out with Charles.
