THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
Cheviot United Methodist Church
It is with much gratitude that I highlight Cheviot United Methodist Church in this week's
newsletter.  There are so many reasons to thank all the wonderful people at Cheviot UMC.  Each week, summer and winter, I'm so glad we are able to hold our market inside at CUMC.  Although the forecast for this Friday is calling for temperatures in the low 90s and possible rain,  we never have to wonder whether market will be rained out, or if a tent will be blown over in a horrific storm, or if market will have to be cancelled due to a dangerous lightening storm.

How wonderful it is for both people and products to be able to be inside where it is always comfortable.  And the folks at CUMC are so welcoming.  What a truly gracious community member they are, opening their doors to LEWFM for the past five years.  We are very fortunate to have found them when we we searching for a place to hold our market year-round.  We could not ask for a better location.  HUGE THANKS TO CHEVIOT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH!

SEASONAL & CHANGING PRODUCTS/ITEMS
Plentiful Produce
Although the rain was a bit untimely, dampening the holiday weekend outdoor activities, it surely was a welcome site for our produce farmers.  When you come to market this Friday you will notice some items not seen since last year, most notably broccoli and carrots.  Also, the zucchini is growing prolifically, so much so that I'm inviting each of you to submit your favorite way to prepare it.  Simply Reply to this email with details about the various ways you use zucchini so I can publish your submissions in a future newsletter.

Here are a couple ideas to get you started.  Jenny of Angela's Homemade Pies & More is making good use of the abundance of zucchini she purchased from My Plum Crazy Farm.  Think cookies, orange chocolate chip zucchini bread, coconut chip zucchini bread, and whatever else strikes her fancy.  I also purchased two very large zucchini from My Plum Crazy Farm last Friday.  I used them to make my Creamy Zucchini Soup with chicken.  I purchased a chicken from Honey Tree Acres, roasted it, made stock from the bones, strained the stock, added some culinary herbs (I used their Italian Seasoning) from Lola's Botanicals, then cooked the zucchini (along with some greens left from the week before) in the stock.  I then used my submersion blender (love that gadget) to puree the soup, added some cream and a bit of milk, added the cut up chicken, adjusted the seasonings and feasted.  Delicious, nutritious, and I'm supporting my local producers.

You, too, can support our local producers by doing your shopping at LEWFM.  To help you Eat Well, when you come to our market this week there will be lots of greens for both cooking and salads, herbs both cut and potted,  and some nice surprises that the farmers find when they do their harvesting just prior to market.  Mother Nature's harvest cannot be perfectly timed, so come to market ready to be pleasantly surprised to see what our farmers have gleaned from their labors in the fields.  And to add some beauty to this bounty, Honey Tree Acres will have fresh cut flower arrangements.  Of course, all of the above is only a smidgen of what's in store for you at LEWFM.  Lots of other vendors will add to your gustatory delight.

Pre-ordering Pays Off
Have you ever arrived at market to purchase your favorite item/s from your favorite vendor/s only to be disappointed because the vendor/s sold out of the item/s?  Did you know that no longer has to happen?  At LEWFM you can pre-order your items and pick them up any time during regular market hours.  Pre-ordering not only pays off for you, it also helps the vendors know how much to prepare/harvest, which greatly reduces waste.  Pre-ordering is a real win-win for all, and it only takes a few minutes of your time to plan ahead and place your order.  Given the importance of Eating Well, getting into the habit of placing your pre-orders each week will likely become a high priority on your weekly To Do List.

There are two easy ways you can place your pre-orders, in person at market or via email.  Here's how the email ordering works:  Email me at LEWFMLOCAL@GMAIL.COM and ask to be added to the vendor email pre-order list.  Each week you will receive an email from the vendors detailing the items they have available for you to order that week.  Reply to their email, letting them know the items you wish to order, then come to market on Friday to pick up your items.

Produce Perks
For those who noticed the logo at the bottom of the newsletter recently and wondered what it means, here is the good news about a new program.  Produce Perks is an incentive program that is meant to encourage and help those who receive EBT (formerly known as food stamps) purchase more produce.  Produce Perks is a dollar for dollar match (up to $10), with the matching dollars used on produce.  The Produce Perks website offers the following additional information:
“Produce Perks” is an initiative modeled after a similar program in Cuyahoga County.  Focus is on access and affordability of healthy fruits and vegetables for under-served consumers.
Produce Perks are incentive tokens given to customers at participating farmers’ markets who use an Ohio Direction Card (“electronic benefits transfer” or EBT card) to purchase food.  A customer wishing to use their food assistance benefits can swipe their card at one central terminal, located at participating market’s information booths, and ask to withdraw a desired amount. The market provides tokens for the transaction and additional Produce Perks that can be spent on fruits and vegetables.  As the name suggests, Produce Perks are only good for purchasing fruits and vegetables.  All other tokens purchased with the Ohio Direction Card are good to use on eligible items at the market.
Please help us spread the word about this very worthwhile program.  One way to help get the word out is to stop by the market management booth to pick up brochures to share with those you know who receive EBT benefits.  You could also leave brochures at your church, doctor or dentist's office, or any locations that would permit you to do so.
