Newsletter for Friday August 17, 2012

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT

While many words could be used to describe her, we simply refer to her as Marvelous Mel, the master mind behind last week's National Farmers' Market Week celebration.  After two years of putting our "want ad" in the newsletter, nearly begging for volunteers to help out at the market, Mel Farnsley virtually showed up on the market's doorstep one Friday during the winter market, asking how she could help us.  The Market Management Team (consisting of two, sometimes, weary women) had been wishing very hard for a Marketing Director and a Special Events Coordinator.  And then, along came Mel to our rescue.

In this week's newsletter we recap the results of Mel's hard work as we thank all those who made last Friday's National Farmers' Market Week celebration such a wonderful success.  The first and hugest thanks goes to Mel.  About a month ago Mel said, "You know, National Farmers' Market Week is coming up soon and I think we should celebrate it."  And we said, "O.K."  That's all it took for Mel to get to work to make it happen.  She almost single-handedly organized the entire event.

The list of those whom we want to thank is long and we hope we don't forget anyone.  We are also including some pictures for the newsletter readers who were not able to attend this gala event.

First we want to thank our vendors who are so faithful in coming to market every week to bring the fruits of their labors to share with their many loyal customers.  Of course, without vendors and customers there would be no Farmers' Market.

Thanks also to Sam Keller, Mayor of Cheviot, (pictured here with Nancy Romans) who presented each of our vendors a Certificate of Appreciation.

Fred the Photographer
We also wish to thank each of the guest vendors, and the folks who did food demos, teaching our customers how to prepare various items sold  at market:  Adrienne Cooper, Cheviot United Methodist Church, Cincinnati Pet Food Pantry, Green Umbrella, Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District.  Also, thanks goes to C'est Cheese for introducing their Food Bus to our market shoppers.  They were a big hit and we might just be seeing a return visit from them.  A special thanks goes to Jan Wolterman who generously donated copies of her book The Munch Crunch Bunch.  Each child at market received a free copy.  Thanks also goes out to Fred the Photographer (who just happens to be Mel's husband).  Thanks, Fred, for all the great pics!

Fred did a great job with this photo where he captured Ora of Ora's Pottery demonstrating origami to one of the younger market shoppers, while in the background Jackie Mallay was teaching David, a market volunteer, the practice of Tai Chi.

Other volunteers included several groups of musicians who entertained market goes, plus Sam the Clown who encouraged passersby along North Bend Road to stop in to join the festivities.

The  entertainment added greatly to the festive ambiance of the celebration.  We hope they will grace us with repeat performances in the future.

The celebration ended in a big way as we announced the winners of the raffle.  Thanks goes out to the area businesses who donated the prizes, and congratulations goes to the following winners:

We also offer huge thanks to the additional volunteers who staffed the Management Booth and supported the event in numerous ways:  Mary Anne, Hannah, and Taylor.  And, if we have forgotten anyone, please accept our apologies and our heartfelt thanks for your support.

And now, we turn our attention to this week's market.

VERY SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
We are very pleased to announce that we now accept Food Stamps at our market.  If you would like to use your food stamp benefits to purchase items at our market simply bring your EBT card to the Market Management Booth.

We hope everyone will help us spread the word about this great news.  Please share the information with neighbors, friends, and co-workers so food stamp beneficiaries will become aware that they can now purchase fresh produce and other healthy food items at the Farmers' Market, directly from the people who produce the foods.

NOTICES
  • Skirtz & Johnston will not be at market during the month of August.  they will return in September.

SEASONAL & CHANGING PRODUCTS/ITEMS
We are continuing to see a plethora of produce overflowing on our farmers' tables at market.  You can choose from many varieties of heirloom tomatoes, as well as peppers from mild to waaay hot, along with all the many kinds of summer vegetables.

We are just beginning to see the onset of the transition season, that's the season where we still see loads of the summer veggies, while we are also seeing the very beginnings of the fall crops.  Butternut squash and spaghetti squash were at market last Friday for the first time this season.  Hmm, maybe sweet potatoes are not far off?  It's fun to come to market and see what our farmers have harvested for our dinner tables.  Yum, yum!
