THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
Growing News, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) From Honey Tree Acres
There is so much growing news from Honey Tree Acres (HTA) that I almost need two newsletters to hold it all.  As you can see from the picture, they have been very busy.  In addition to the plants in the foreground, you can see additional greenhouses in the background.  To see what they've been up to, let's start with a brief walk in the farmers' shoes via their update about the dance they are doing with the weather.

Growing Update
The good news is that now that the temperatures are starting to stay above 25 degrees, we are finally able to begin planting in the cold frames.  We intentionally held off planting any earlier due to the single digit temps.  Growing is a balancing act - if you get too aggressive you risk ruining your crop and having to start over - a delay of 6-8 weeks easily.  If you are too conservative, then you have everything come in late.  We decided to hold off a couple of weeks to get us past the worst of the cold.  Unfortunately, that also pushes out the maturity dates by a couple of weeks - however, that is much better than losing it all and delaying 6-8 weeks.

We recently transplanted Poc Choy, spinach, beets and kale as well as sown a batch of radishes, onions and carrots. We have more to plant which means much more to come.

And now more news about HTA; after a successful first year at LEWFM last year, HTA has decided to offer a CSA beginning this May.  Following is pertinent information from them.

Honey Tree Acres invites you to share in our vision of a sustainable future.  New in 2015...we are launching the next phase of sharing our vision of a sustainable future by partnering with a dedicated community of 15 or so consumers through CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) memberships. For those not familiar with a CSA, it is a partnership between the farmer and a dedicated community of supporters who enter into an agreement to share in the cost of the season's harvest in exchange for "shares" of the harvest during the growing season. We will harvest a wide variety of produce from mid-May through early October to share with our members on a weekly basis.  Details are available on the Honey Tree Acres website http://www.honeytreeacres.com/#!csa/cewk

As you see from the information on their website, Honey Tree Acres is committed to raising only non-GMO, soy free produce, poultry, and eggs.  Although they are not certified organic, they follow organic practices and use no synthetic chemicals.  Their philosophy is, "A healthy diet starts with healthy, synthetic chemical-free food."

In addition to supplying CSA members with weekly "shares," Honey Tree Acres will also have a full line of produce for customers to purchase.

And if you are eager to bring some beauty into your home and/or yard, you will be pleased with the lovely selections of potted flowers they are currently bringing to market.

SPECIAL GUEST VENDOR

I am pleased to let you know that Evergreen Holistic Learning Center will be at market this Friday.  For long-time customers of the market you will recognize them as one of the market's every week vendors from previous years.  They have been quite busy with numerous ventures and have not been able to attend LEWFM on a regular basis.  They will be a market this Friday for a one-week special appearance.  Following is a run down of what they plan to bring.

We just boiled down our maple tea and syrup for this year, and thought it might be good to sell at the market. We also have black walnuts as well as our zucchini bread and new zucchini chocolate chip mini muffins.

If you have never made maple syrup, from personal experience I can tell you it is a huge project.  Lots of time and effort go into collecting the sap and boiling it down.  The folks at Evergreen Holistic Learning Center have done all the hard work for you so you can enjoy real maple syrup made very close to home.  And, by purchasing from Evergreen Holistic Learning Center you will be helping them further their very useful work.  For more information about the important work they do, you may visit their website  http://www.evergreenhlc.org/

Produce Perks
For those who noticed the logo at the bottom of the newsletter recently and wondered what it means, here is the good news about a new program.  Produce Perks is an incentive program that is meant to encourage and help those who receive EBT (formerly known as food stamps) purchase more produce.  Produce Perks is a dollar for dollar match (up to $10), with the matching dollars used on produce.  The Produce Perks website offers the following additional information:
“Produce Perks” is an initiative modeled after a similar program in Cuyahoga County.  It is administered by OSU Extension, Hamilton County as a partnership of OSU Extension, Hamilton County; the City of Cincinnati Health Department; and the City of Cincinnati Creating Healthy Communities initiative.  Focus is on access and affordability of healthy fruits and vegetables for under-served consumers.
Produce Perks are incentive tokens given to customers at participating farmers’ markets who use an Ohio Direction Card (“electronic benefits transfer” or EBT card) to purchase food.  A customer wishing to use their food assistance benefits can swipe their card at one central terminal, located at participating market’s information booths, and ask to withdraw a desired amount. The market provides tokens for the transaction and additional Produce Perks that can be spent on fruits and vegetables.  As the name suggests, Produce Perks are only good for purchasing fruits and vegetables.  All other tokens purchased with the Ohio Direction Card are good to use on eligible items at the market.
Please help us spread the word about this very worthwhile program.  One way to help get the word out is to stop by the market management booth to pick up brochures to share with those you know who receive EBT benefits.  You could also leave brochures at your church, doctor or dentist's office, or any locations that would permit you to do so.
