THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
This week's spotlight shines on Charles Purdue, a man of many talents.  When describing Charles, the first problem one encounters is where to start because he fills so many roles at market.  Given that he is always surrounded by kids (of all ages) we could start by saying he is a kid magnet.  We have had parents tell us their kids love coming to market because they get to hang out with Charles.

In addition to working with the kids in the Kids & Krafts booth, Charles also sells his handcrafted Native American wooden flutes, cutting boards, rolling pins, along with various types of jewelry and other gift items.  If you want a truly unique and personalized gift, consider talking with Charles:  perhaps a beautiful and functional cutting board for the new bride and groom, or a bread knife for those who love artisan breads.  Just tell him a bit about the person for whom you want to purchase a gift and his creative mind will start to work.   Just remember, though, that this type of handcrafted work takes time, so make arrangements ahead and it will be worth the wait.

Charles also entertains market shoppers with his calming flute music.  At times he also pulls out his handmade dulcimer and "picks" out a few tunes.  And when market is over you can find Charles helping other vendors fold up their tents and loading items into their cars.  A mild mannered man and friend to all.  Everybody Loves Charles.

 RECENTLY ADDED
We are pleased to announce the addition of a new vendor.  Starting this week, please welcome Ethan Snider of SUMMUH.  Ethan will be introducing a product that we have never had at our market:  Hummus.  Ethan brought several varieties to market last Friday for management to sample.  Taking a few bites resulted in quickly signing him on as our newest vendor.

When asked to tell a bit about himself and his product Ethan shared the following:
I have been in the restaurant business for 23 years. I have a bachelors degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.

At SUMMUH we stay as local, organic and natural as possible. I tend to think of it as the Ben and Jerrys of the hummus world. Fun, quirky names with full focus on ingredients.

SEASONAL & CHANGING PRODUCTS/ITEMS
Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes.  Squash, squash, squash.  The Produce Vendors' tables are overflowing with wonderful summer produce items including; several types of cucumber for slicing, etc. and even the little pickling type, along with beans, beets, blackberries, ground cherries, kale, Swiss chard, slicing onions, peppers, okra, cabbage, carrot fingers, tomatillos, new potatoes, and more.

If you would like to purchase larger quantities of pickling cucumbers for $10 a basket, or blackberries for $30 per gallon, pre order them by calling the Romans Family Farm at (812) 233-7990.

At market this week you will also find herbs, cut, potted, or dried, beautiful plant arrangements, and gorgeous cut flowers to add a splash of beauty to your home or to give as gifts.  Remember, when you purchase your gifts of flowers at the Farmers' Market you are helping to support  local growers and adding to the economic development of local communities, rather than having your money go who knows where.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A question to ponder:  Does the food/the ingredients for the food I serve my family come from a farmer's field or from a chemist's laboratory?  Hint:  If you are eating prepackaged food and you can't pronounce the ingredients listed on the package, it is more likely the "food" is from a chemist's lab than from the farmer's field.

If you would like to discuss this (or any other) topic further, feel free to stop by the Market Management Booth.  We're always glad to hear comments from our customers.

Please share this newsletter with friends and family to help spread the word about LEWFM!
Our Vendors are at market each Friday from 3:00 until 7:00
rain or shine, and they hope you will be too.
