This week's spotlight shines on Angela's Homemade Pies. After joining the market at the beginning of this year's outdoor season, this booth quickly became a very popular stop on shoppers' journey through the market.
Although customers see only the smiling face of Jenny Kettering, there is more to this success story than meets the eye. Jenny's sister, Kathy Kettering, is a behind the scene help in this endeavor. Perhaps you are wondering about the name, Angela's Homemade Pies. We did too, so we asked them where Angela figures into this and they responded with the following delightful story:

You, too, can treat yourself to some of these delicious desserts. Jenny sells pies by the slice or whole, along with a variety of other tasty treats. She also offers vegan options, along with zero sugar/zero add sweetener options on some items. If you would like to purchase a whole pie, it is best to pre order by calling Jenny at (513) 746-6937. Jenny also takes requests and suggestions for adding to her current lineup of yummy desserts.
All our life we enjoyed these wonderful pies. We never had any other pies than our Mothers so we didn’t really understand how really yummy they were. We thought it was strange whenever there was a bake sale or a potluck at church people would ask us out in the parking lot on the way in, “What did your Mom make” or say “I’ll buy your Moms right now”. It kind-of annoyed me that what I brought never got to the tables. We just didn’t understand that not everyone makes their crust from scratch or that not everyone takes the time to collect fresh ripe fruit for the best flavor and using less sugar.Mom was a stay at home Mother of six that took pride in her cooking. We had a small track of land that we grew most all our vegetables and fruits. The most remarkable were her pies. My sister & I have done our best to hold true to her memory in making these pies using the glass pie plates and only seasonal fresh fruits, no Trans fats, and no preservatives. Just a simple pie made the way Angela made them.

As you think about the food you purchase for and serve to your family, you might want to consider these words from Joel Salatin. For those of you unfamiliar with Salatin's writings, many of his books including his most recent one, Folks This Ain't Normal, is available at Cincinnati Public Library
While the produce at our market is not certified organic, it is grown using no synthetic chemicals. And, given all the work the farmers do to bring this healthy food to us, the price is more than reasonable. If you doubt this, try spending a day out in the field with them.
