Newsletter for Friday October 7, 2016

Summer Market schedule: Each Friday 3:00 - 7:00

Lettuce Eat Well Farmers' Market is held inside year-round for your shopping comfort at Cheviot United Methodist Church 3820 Westwood Northern Blvd. 45211.  The market is held in the church's Narthex, which is just inside the main entrance of the church.  Please note that this location could vary depending on other activities taking place at the church.  Follow the happy voices and you'll find us.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
This Week's Newsletter is Chock-Full of News, News, News
Yes, when you come to market this Friday you will see a new face, an "old" face selling a new product line, faces we see only the first Friday of the month, lots of yummy foods to sample to put a smile on your face, and pumpkins on which to draw faces, along with beautiful items for your Autumn decorating.

Starting with the new face:  This week we welcome  our newest LEWFM vendor
Tiffany with her signature flax crackers
member, Tiffany Wise, founder and owner of The Healing Kitchen.  Tiffany will be starting us off with two of her signature items, flax crackers and two types of cashew butter (savory and sweet).  All items were developed and made by Tiffany at the Findlay Kitchen, across the street from Findlay Market.

Looking ahead, Tiffany plans to add bone broth to her lineup in November.

Tiffany is also a Licensed Massage Therapist and a Certified Wellness Coach.  With these credentials added to her healing toolbox, she incorporates many facets to her approach to health and healing.  We're very fortunate to have Tiffany as part of our ever-expanding Collaborative Specialty Farmers' Market.

Tiffany will be at market this Friday October 7 and next Friday October 14 and then will return in November.

Our Harvest Cooperative Farm
This week you will also notice an addition to the lineup of items I sell from local producers; produce from Our Harvest Cooperative (OHC).   The farmers at OHC grow a wide variety of veggies on land they lease on North Bend Road in Finneytown and a larger farm near Morrow.  All produce is, of course, grown using no synthetic chemicals.  OHC also partners with Cincinnati State, providing onsite training for their Urban Agriculture students.  This is a real win-win for all of us.  We not only have access to quality produce, by supporting OHC we are also joining in the effort to "grow more growers," for without new, young farmers coming on board we will be left high and dry as our older farmers retire.

Pre-ordering of this produce is highly recommended because I will have only a limited number of items beyond the pre-orders.  For more info about pre-ordering, see the Previously Announced section.

Moving along, you will see those faces that are with us only the first Friday of the month; Deb & Mike of Abundant Green Pastures Ranch with their 100% grass fed beef.  I can't say enough good things about them and their product.  Actually, I said quite a lot of good things about them in a previous newsletter.  To view the article simply scroll down to Archive (on the left) and scroll to the week of August 28-September 4.  Given that Mike and Deb are at our market only monthly it's important to plan ahead to stock up your freezer.

And, to give you an idea for using 100% grass fed beef from Abundant Green Pastures Ranch,
Chef Gary, aka, The Pickled Pig, will be serving samples of "Beef & Kraut," meatballs simmered in Gary's fermented kraut.  Gary's fermented veggies is another product that deserves accolades.  At market I often introduce new customers to the fermented veggies by saying, "They taste yummy and they're good for your tummy."  The importance of probiotics found in the fermented veggies has caught the attention of many folks who are health savvy.  If you remain a bit skeptical, stop by The Pickled Pig table for a sample and find out for yourself.  Gary will also have copies of his recipe for Beef & Kraut.

This week you will also be able to sample a yummy dish made by Jennifer Even of the Ohio State University Extension Office.  Jenny has been with us a few times over the summer and has inspired customers to purchase and prepare produce items that they have never before experienced.  Her food demonstrations show us just how simple  -  and quick  -  it is to make a nutritious meal.  She will provide samples and recipes.

To help you add some beauty to your Autumn decorations, Honey Tree Acres and My Plum Crazy Farm will have pumpkins, gourds, spectacular fall colored flowers and corn stalks.  The corn stalks are pre-order only.  For more information about the corn stalks or to place your pre-order, email Cy and Teresa at myplumcrazyfarm125@gmail.com

The Return of Green GRRL Wisdom
For all of you who have asked for soap at our market and the return of Green GRRL Wisdom (aka Karen Blocher), with her plethora of handcrafted items, your wait is almost over.  Karen will be returning to LEWFM beginning on October 14.  For a sneak peek of what is in store for you when she returns, check out her website  https://www.greengrrrlwisdom.com/

Pork Update:  As of this writing, I do not have a definite date regarding when Mahlon's pork will be ready.  He informed me that he is still waiting for the butcher to finish the curing, cutting, and packaging.  The finished product will certainly be worth the wait.  Stay tuned for more updates on the pork.

Abundant Green Pastures Ranch will be at our market the first Friday of each month with their 100% grass fed beef from their Red Devon heritage breed cattle.

Pre-ordering Pays Off
Have you ever arrived at market to purchase your favorite item/s from your favorite vendor/s only to be disappointed because the vendor/s sold out of the item/s?  Did you know that no longer has to happen?  At LEWFM you can pre-order your items and pick them up any time during regular market hours.  Pre-ordering not only pays off for you, it also helps the vendors know how much to prepare/harvest, which greatly reduces waste.  Pre-ordering is a real win-win for all, and it only takes a few minutes of your time to plan ahead and place your order.  Given the importance of Eating Well, getting into the habit of placing your pre-orders each week will likely become a high priority on your weekly To Do List.

There are two easy ways you can place your pre-orders: in person at market or via email.  Here's how the email ordering works:  Email me at LEWFMLOCAL@GMAIL.COM and ask to be added to the vendor email pre-order list.  Each week you will receive emails from the vendors detailing the items they have available for you to order that week.  Reply to their email, letting them know the items you wish to order, then come to market on Friday to pick up your items.

Produce Perks
For those who noticed the logo at the bottom of the newsletter recently and wondered what it means, here is the good news about a new program.  Produce Perks is an incentive program that is meant to encourage and help those who receive EBT (formerly known as food stamps) purchase more produce.  Produce Perks is a dollar for dollar match (up to $10), with the matching dollars used on produce.  The Produce Perks website offers the following additional information:
“Produce Perks” is an initiative modeled after a similar program in Cuyahoga County.  Focus is on access and affordability of healthy fruits and vegetables for under-served consumers.
Produce Perks are incentive tokens given to customers at participating farmers’ markets who use an Ohio Direction Card (“electronic benefits transfer” or EBT card) to purchase food.  A customer wishing to use their food assistance benefits can swipe their card at one central terminal, located at participating market’s information booths, and ask to withdraw a desired amount. The market provides tokens for the transaction and additional Produce Perks that can be spent on fruits and vegetables.  As the name suggests, Produce Perks are only good for purchasing fruits and vegetables.  All other tokens purchased with the Ohio Direction Card are good to use on eligible items at the market.
Please help us spread the word about this very worthwhile program.  One way to help get the word out is to stop by the market management booth to pick up brochures to share with those you know who receive EBT benefits.  You could also leave brochures at your church, doctor or dentist's office, or any locations that would permit you to do so.
