THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
This week's spotlight shines on our newest vendors, Franciska Issaka and Marget Saine of CENSUDI (Sustainable Development Initiatives).  CENSUDI is a non profit organization which raises funds by selling baskets and bracelets made by women and girls in Ghana.  The proceeds from the sale of these items are then sent back to Ghana to provide funds for the girls to attend school.  First established in 1994, the objectives of CENSUDI are

• Improve access to quality education for girls and women
• Mobilize girls and women for leadership
• Provide advice and support to communities and organizations to eliminate Traditional Policies and Practices that Discriminate Against Women and Girls  (TRAPPDAW)
• Support specific activities that benefit and empower women, reduce poverty and generate wealth for long term development
• Transform communities and organizations for sustainable poverty reduction
• Mobilize resources to support our work
[taken from their website]  For a moving and inspiring story about Franciska and the founding of CENSUDI, and more information about the important work of the organization click here.

Baskets and bracelets are not the only items you can purchase from Franciska and Marget.  They are now carrying four types of mustard (in jars) made locally in Oakley by Gene the Mustard King.  We are hoping they will be able to sell other locally made items in the near future.  Doing so will provide LEWFM with additional products made locally, help support local food and non food artisans, while also allowing CENSUDI to provide funds for their worthwhile endeavor.

NOTICES

LETTUCE LIVE MORE SUSTAINABLY
The LEWFM Management Team takes Living More Sustainably quite seriously.  Currently we are busy preparing for the upcoming Summer Season Market.  A major focus of our work is to continue to bring together a group of vendors who also takes sustainability seriously.  We do this by working with our current vendors, encouraging them to strive for ways to become even more sustainable in their practices, and by recruiting additional vendors who use sustainable practices.  Why is this so important to us?  Because, we believe you are what you eat ate.  Whether you are eating beans or beef, you are what the beans or beef ate.  Do you know what your beans or beef ate?  We find that the best way to know what your food ate is to purchase your food at the farmers' market, where you can talk with those who produced your food.

We are not alone in believing that it is vitally important to choose your food wisely and to know about its origins.  In a recent interview, Margaret Webb, author of Apples to Oysters, explains the importance of knowing those who are responsible for producing the food we consume.  After watching the interview you will likely be grateful for the lengths we go to in continuing to search for the very best vendors to add to our already great lineup.  Because there is still room for improvement, the best vendors are open to your requests.  We encourage you to ask questions of the vendors, inquiring about their practices and offering suggestions if you know of ways they might be even more sustainable in their practices.  Of course, we are also interested in hearing from you.  We invite you to stop by the market management booth to share you suggestions with us.

You can watch the interview with Margaret Webb here.

REMINDERS
While some of you are long-time readers of the newsletter, people who are new to the market are reading the newsletter for the first time; therefore, the Reminders section is included each week so new folks can see what's happening around the market and around town.

Garden Claw
Great deal for gardeners, Limited time offer from February 1 - February 28 (or until all are sold, whichever comes first).  There are times when something that seems too good to be true is actually true.  Granny's Garden School in Loveland is sharing their good fortune.  They recently received a donation of Garden Claws to be used for fund raising.  Usually selling for $25 - $30, Granny's Garden is offering them for $20, half of which will go to Granny's Garden School and, if you use code "LEWFM" when placing your order, the other $10 will go to Lettuce Eat Well Farmers' Market.  If you are unfamiliar with how awesome the garden claw is, watch the demonstration video here.

[it's the second video, further down the page, picturing the children with Granny]

After viewing the video you will likely want to order one for yourself and/or a friend.  You can order by credit card or by check.  You can pick up your garden claw at our market early in March.  Details will be emailed to you after you place your order.  Remember to use code "LEWFM".  This offer is for a very limited time.  For more information regarding ordering click here.
