Newsletter for Friday April 26, 2013.

While the market's year round location is Cheviot United Methodist Church 3820 Westwood Northern Blvd. 45211, the location at the church varies depending on other activities at the church and depending on the weather (sunny and warm, we're outside; stormy or cold, we're inside).  Just follow the happy voices and you'll find us.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
This week the spotlight shines on Jenny Kettering of Angela's Homemade Pies.  Just like our other Very Valued Vendors who start out with a small variety of offerings, when Jenny first joined LEWFM she primarily made pies and cobblers.  Jenny has continued to add to her lineup of delicious desserts.  A number of her additions are the result of customer feedback and requests.  For those who are wondering who Angela is, Jenny offers the following information about the origin of the name, along with  some informative tidbits about her products.

"Angela's Homemade Pies is a result of my mother's love of baking and feeding her family good farm fresh deserts and the fact that we always had an abundance of fruits available at our family's homestead. She took pride in the quality of food she set on the table using all of the good produce the land provided. That's the same quality I try to put into all the baked goods offered at the market - using Morh's fresh eggs and sometimes some from my own hens, honey from my brothers bees, jam from Jo's Jams and as much local fruits as possible. I am still using Hollmeyer's peaches, and Backyard Orchard's grapes stored in the freezer.  Hopefully I will have home grown strawberries this year!  Feel free to make suggestions for a product you would like me to make as Autumn's Delight, the Vegan Pecan Pie and the Key Lime Cookies are a request from customers and market venders. I am currently working on a vegan pumpkin pie and a carrot cake and hope to have them at market soon. Who knows what will come as a product of produce the other venders will supply to the market and to Angela's Pies!"

  • Currently, Mohr Animal Acres attends market every other week.  They will be at market May 3.  They hope to begin attending market every week at some point this summer.  They are also unveiling Bistro de Mohr, their food truck, where they will be serving soups, sandwiches, and beverages.  Keep checking this weekly newsletter for updates on this exciting new addition to the market!

We hope you are getting all your old electronics together to bring to our electronic recycling event on Friday, May 3.  The event, which is open to all, will take place during regular market hours, 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. The items will be collected by eCycleIT and will be put to good use.  They assure us that nothing will go into the landfill.  The list of items they will accept is extensive, including computers, printers, fax machines, telephones, and much more.  Please help us spread the word by forwarding this newsletter to your contact list.  For a list of items eCycleIt will accept and for further information about all the other special events we have planned for each Friday during the month of May, click here.

IMPORTANT HAPPENINGS AROUND TOWN
Angela Ebner from Permaganic will be one of our special guest vendors during the month of May kickoff of the Summer of Sustainability.  Angela will share her expertise in the area of permaculture, a sustainable way to use your land.  Angela and her husband Luke also work with youth in the Over the Rhine area of Cincinnati.  They use gardening as a way to help the kids in many ways.  Angela emailed us recently asking us to help spread the word about their fundraising effort.  Following is information about their campaign that runs only until June 10, 2013.
Please consider clicking on the following link to view/read and help fund our Youth Interns this year.  The goal we set is for $1,000, which funds one teen. Or help us exceed the goal and unlock a matching grant.  All donations are tax-deductible.

If you are looking for an event that will be fun for individuals or families, you are invited to attend Gorman Heritage Farm's Farm to Fork Savor the Season on Saturday May 4.  This would be a great way to introduce children to a working farm, or to treat yourself to some time to leisurely stroll the grounds, enjoy the delicious foods prepared by expert chefs, and maybe even pick up some cooking tips that you can use at home.

REMINDERS
While some of you are long-time readers of the newsletter, people who are new to the market are reading the newsletter for the first time; therefore, the Reminders section is included each week so new folks can see what's happening around the market and around town.

The Romans Family Farm, who has been a Very Valued Vendor at LEWFM since its first year of operation, will be returning again for this summer's market.  YAY!  They will again be offering their Eating Seasonally CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).  If you are unfamiliar with the concept of a CSA, there are many online sites where you can learn more, such as the Local Harvest Website http://www.localharvest.org/csa/    Eating Seasonally CSA is currently taking applications for their 2013 CSA.  For further information you can visit their Facebook page here.

Garden Claw
Great deal for gardeners:  Limited time offer has been extended!
There are times when something that seems too good to be true is actually true.  Granny's Garden School in Loveland is sharing their good fortune.  They recently received a donation of Garden Claws to be used for fund raising.  Usually selling for $25 - $30, Granny's Garden is offering them for $20, half of which will go to Granny's Garden School and, if you use code "LEWFM" when placing your order, the other $10 will go to Lettuce Eat Well Farmers' Market.  If you are unfamiliar with how awesome the garden claw is, watch the demonstration video here.

[it's the second video, further down the page, picturing the children with Granny]

After viewing the video you will likely want to order one for yourself and/or a friend.  You can order by credit card or by check.  You can pick up your garden claw at our market.  Details will be emailed to you after you place your order.  Remember to use code "LEWFM".  This offer is for a limited time.  For more information regarding ordering click here.
