Some customers have asked us when we will be moving back to Harvest Home Park; therefore, we realize that not everyone has been made aware that we will be staying at Cheviot United Methodist Church throughout the summer. Please help us spread the word about the market's correct location!
While
the market's year round location is Cheviot United Methodist Church
3820 Westwood Northern Blvd. 45211, the location at the church varies
depending on other activities at the church and depending on the weather
(sunny and warm, we're outside; stormy or cold, we're inside). Just
follow the happy voices and you'll find us.
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
This week's spotlight shines on Jo the Jam Lady. Actually the name is not entirely accurate as Jo also makes scones, granola, and wonderful noodles. Jo goes to extraordinary lengths in order to provide the ultimate in products for her customers. For example, Jo doesn't just go to the store and buy flour, no that would never do. Jo buys locally grown wheat berries, then she mills the berries into flour which she uses for her noodles. She also recently began using locally grown spelt, which she has determined makes excellent noodles and nutty tasting scones. Spelt is also lower in gluten, higher in protein, and easier to digest than wheat.
As a way to be even more up close and personal with the items she uses to make her value added products, this year Jo decided to actually participate in some of the growing and harvesting of produce. Following is her story about her farming experiences. (The reference to grandpa is not Jo's grandpa but rather the name of the farm where she worked.) Jo also mentions other vendors from whom she purchases her supplies. That's why we often refer to her as "the queen of local."
If the above reasons are not enough, the market managers love Jo because she is such a wonderful team player. Not only does she positively respond to the request that vendors source locally whenever possible, thus helping other vendors through their purchases, she also lends a helping hand whenever needed. When you visit her booth you will notice a large container of water. She provides that so customers can refresh themselves as they shop the market. Jo is truly a joy to have as part of our market.

This year, I was privileged to work at Grandpa's Garden. I got to hoe, dig potatoes, pick beans and berries to name just a few chores. I have a whole new respect for what it takes for farmers to put food on our tables. I have gone berry, apple, and peach picking and processed the fruit within a day. Most recently, I made my first batch of jam with strawberries grown aquaponically [from Greener Portions, a recently added vendor at LEWFM]. They are grown in water, with fish providing the natural nutrients for the plants. I'm excited because we will be having more produce available through this same method (which means we can eat fresh and local even in the winter)!
Jennifer Kettering (Angela's Homemade Pies) braved the heat last week to pick raspberries for her yummy goodies and my jam. The jam is packed and ready to sell. I got some blackberries from the Romans' Family Farm. They were kind enough to put the berries up for me while I was visiting family out west. That batch of jam is canned. I'm even using some of the berries to make a jalapeƱo variety. I got those peppers from a local farm as well. I have branched out to making granola, using local honey that has properties that help build our immune system. (I get my honey from Jennifer's brother.)
