THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
A Question & Answer Walk Through Part of the Market

What is Jerusalem Artichoke and what do I do with it?
Neither from Jerusalem nor an artichoke, Jerusalem artichoke, sometimes referred to as sunchokes, is actually a type of sunflower.  The tuber is prepared numerous ways.  A quick Internet search will provide various preparation options, including sunchoke chips and roasted sunchoke.  At market, you can find sunchoke at Reidel's Village General booth.

Who are some of the vendors we refer to as the King and Queens of Local?

You can find the King of Local at the Summuh booth.  Chef Ethan is a very popular vendor at our market as well as at other Farmers' Markets in the Greater Cincinnati area.  While at the various markets, Chef Ethan purchases produce that is abundant and then uses his creative mind/talents to make the most delicious hummus type dips.  As he says, "Summuh Hummus is not just chickpeas."  When he first started at our market he sold out quickly.  Now, however, he is making a more abundant supply.

Certainly one Queen of Local at our market is Jo the Jam Lady.  Who else would go to the lengths Jo goes to to bring the best of the best to market?  She seems to always be trying to top herself, ever striving to improve her products.  For example:  To make her whole wheat egg noodles, Jo now purchases local wheat berries, then mills them herself and then adds eggs from Mohr Animal Acres.  Now that is going the extra local mile.  For her jams and apple butter, Jo has purchased peaches and apples from a local orchard.  She also makes scones and granola to the delight of her frequent repeat customers.

Another Queen of Local is Jenny of Angela's Homemade Pies.  As stated in last week's newsletter, as the seasons change Jenny will be changing her offerings.  Her newly introduced baked goods quickly became quite popular with market shoppers.  Last Friday her Honey Crunch cookies and applesauce muffins sold out.  Jenny will be adding some additional baked goods items, and she is open to customer requests/suggestions.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
One of the saddest stories of the past century in the United States is the destruction of community-based family farming.  .... and increased dependency of urban and suburban communities on far-off sources of nutrition.
Going Local by Michael H. Shuman
By purchasing more of our items from the local Farmers' Markets we can change the story and help create a happier ending.

Because LEWFM is a year-round market, shoppers are able to purchase not only their weekly food items; they will also be able to purchase their gift items at the winter market, as additional vendors will be bringing both food and non-food items suitable for gift giving.

Please share this newsletter with friends and family to help spread the word about LEWFM!
Our Very Valued Vendors are at market each Friday from 3:00 until 7:00 rain or shine and they hope you will be there too.
